Meet Bet
Known to almost everyone as Bet, Elizabeth is one of Phoenix Singers’ warmest, funniest and most enthusiastic members. She describes joining the choir as one of the best things she has ever done and firmly believes that anyone considering it should stop thinking and simply come along - especially if they are retired. In Bet’s words, it is friendly, good for the soul and considerably cheaper than therapy.
Away from the choir, Bet’s proudest achievements include marrying her lovely husband, Den, enjoying an unforgettable eight-week honeymoon in Zambia and raising three wonderful daughters and one exceptional son. She has also been promoted to **Nanners ten times**, with one precious grandchild who will always remain in the family’s hearts. Completing the household is Jinee, the family’s gorgeous Cockerpoo, named after Bet’s nan.
Bet previously worked for St Helens Education as an English as an Additional Language Support Nursery Nurse. She also considers finally passing her driving test to be one of life’s major victories.
Her singing career began at the age of 13, when she performed with the St Helens School Choir at the Liederhalle in Stuttgart, Germany. It is a story her family still proudly tells at every available opportunity: “Didn’t you know? Our Bett sang in Germany!”
After that early brush with international stardom, Bet hardly sang outside the house unless a radio and wooden spoon were involved. Phoenix Singers has now given her another chance to feel like a superstar, and she has loved every minute of it.
Bet can usually be found chatting, laughing and occasionally remembering that she is meant to be singing. Should you meet her at rehearsal, make sure you say hello — and keep an eye out for her future posthumous bestseller, *A Day in the Life of Nanner Betlarr*.
